Fall Inspired Science Lessons

Each new season brings about features that are perfect for scientific investigation and inquiry.  Fall is no exception. Here are some fall inspired science lessons that will have your students summoning the scientific process like pros!

Life Cycles

Use pumpkins (or another Fall fruit/plant) as a way to talk about a plant’s life cycle!  First, discuss the journey of a seed, germination, sprouting and more!  Here are some diagram ideas that students can create:

After much discussion, have your students see a plant come to life before their eyes!  Open a pumpkin, leave the seeds inside, add soil and water.  Have students track the plant’s growth and keep a journal with their observations.

Science Investigators

Part of the scientific process is investigating the properties of various materials.  Since Fall is filled with unique features students have many objects to choose from for their investigation.  Here are some examples:

Investigate fall fruits or vegetables such as: pumpkins, apples, corn, squash, etc. Have students describe the smells, textures, tastes and visual attributes.  This is a great way to get students thinking about the investigational process.  (Taken from MPM Ideas)

Take students on a Fall nature hike, and have them collect various items they find along their way.  Then have students dissect and take a close look at each item.  Students can choose a specific number of items to describe OR they can compare 2-3 items in a venn diagram.  (Taken from Edventures)

Diagrams & Labels

Another feature of the scientific process is to create realistic diagrams with accurate labels. Here is an example of a diagram of an apple, with proper labeling.  This will also fit in great with your plant unit!

Experiment

Most kids will tell you their favorite part of science is the cool experiments they get to conduct! Here is a fun Fall experiment to try in your home or class.  Show your students how water travels through a leaf or plant.  All you’ll need is a fresh leaf, water, a cup and some food coloring.  Have students measure the level of the water by taping a line on the cup, this will help them to see that the water level is slowly decreasing.  Also, have your students keep a journal to track daily changes in the leaf!  Click here for more information.
