When the school day was winding down, my students would anxiously wait for their favorite part of the day: read aloud time! They would inch close on the carpet and excitedly strain their necks trying to catch a glimpse of our newest read. Even now, my daughter runs towards me with full force when I say the words “story time”! Kid’s absolutely love a creative book, especially if it can appeal to their silly imaginative side and relieve some tension from their busy day. Here are 10 children’s story books that are hilarious and will have your students or kids roaring with laughter and thoroughly entertained.
Mustache Baby – By: Bridget Heos
I have to admit, this book had ME laughing! Mustache Baby an ingenious book about a baby born with mustache. The baby’s parents worry whether he’ll end up having a “good guy mustache” or a “bad guy mustache”. The book starts off with plenty of “good guy” mustache cliches like a cowboy, cop and more. Soon enough though, a “bad guy” mustache starts to form, filled with other comical cliches. This leaves Mustache Baby’s parents with a decision to shape their baby back towards goodness!
2. The Pigeon Needs A Bath – By: Mo Willems
This book belongs to a series of books about this stubborn pigeon and his antics. The premise of this series by Mo Willems is that the pigeon tries to convince readers to let him do outrageous things like drive a bus, or skip his bath! All of this pigeon’s requests, and even more-so his reasoning, will have your students very amused!
3. None The Number – By: Oliver Jeffers
This isn’t your typical counting book. It’s filled with quirky ideas and comical commentary! Like when 8 party guests try to guess what a clearly wrapped teddy bear present is (they venture guesses like a tennis racquet, balloon, socks and more). This is definitely a book for a younger audience, to help strengthen their awareness of numbers. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about the way the characters have been illustrated is also quite funny! Here is one thing to look out for: on one page, 4 is the number of tantrums a character has. As cute and funny as that is, the word “stupid” does appear on that page. So, if you’re anything like me you might cover that part up with a piece of indiscreet tape and pretend all is well :).
4. Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type – By: Doreen Cronin
This is an impossible story about a group of cows typing up a letter to their farmer. They have some demands, and they want their voices to be heard! Soon enough the other farm animals join in and begin a farm-wide strike, holding back milk, eggs and more. My students always loved chanting “click, clack, moo” whenever prompted by the text. This is a fun read!
5. Diary Of A Worm – By: Doreen Cronin
Here is another Doreen Cronin tale of creatures that can magically communicate with us. Diary of A Worm is the incredibly clever account of a worm in the format of his diary. It is perfect for a science unit about soil, and is filled with informative tidbits. This is a story of a regular worm, learning not to bother his dad when he’s eating the newspaper. The best part is, your kids/students will be none the wiser that they’re actually learning, because this book will have them laughing throughout!
6. Breaking News: Bear Alert – By: David Biedrzycki
Breaking News Bear Alert is a hilarious story about two bears who are rudely awaken from their hibernation. They emerge from their secluded resting place and descend upon a local city. A series of comical events ensue as the bears seemingly terrorize the town, while mistaking everyone’s fear as actual kindness. I found the illustrations to be more modern and captivating for students to be all the more engaged with the story.
7. If You Give A Mouse A Cookie – By: Laura Numeroff
This book is more of a sweet kind of funny, and the mouse actually parallels a preschooler’s behavior. So, if you’ve got a young child this would be a great read for them. It’s a story about a boy who gives a mouse a cookie, but this one act sets off a series of effects. For example, the cookie makes the mouse thirsty for milk, and the milk makes the mouse need to check if he has a milk mustache, and so on. In my opinion, this is an amusing read for kids ages 4-6.
What would happen if the main character of a story could edit the story as they pleased? Well, that’s exactly what happens in this series of books entitled “Chester“. Melanie Watt presents a cat who wants to shape his own story and is armed with a dreaded red marker in order to make it all happen. It’s super funny to watch as Chester sets himself up to be in a series of praiseworthy situations. This is a classic funny book.
9. Scaredy Squirrel – By: Melanie Watt
Scaredy Squirrel is another fun Melanie Watt book, which is also a series. It features an overly paranoid and fearful squirrel, who creates elaborate plans before doing anything! Oh, and if there are any hiccups in the plan, this squirrel becomes a frantic mess. Kids absolutely love the nonsense that frightens this furry little guy.
10. You’re Finally Here – By: Melanie Watt
Ok, so I know I’ve gone Melanie Watt crazy for the last 3 books, but she really has some hilarious children’s books. This story is about an adorable bunny who has been anxiously waiting for someone to read his book. When the reader first opens the book, they’re celebrated for doing so. However, the bunny quickly turns upset, asking the reader why they took so long, and details all of the quirky things that happened while he waited. This is such an adorably funny book. Your students will be so amused by this cute and quirky character.
